How To Make Adirondack Chairs

Learning how to make an Adirondack chair is the ideal plan for many individuals who love to enjoy their outdoor space.  These chairs are the most comfortable chairs anyone could ever imagine. One of the most distinctive characteristics about the Adirondack chair is that it does not require a cushion in order to achieve a high level of comfort.

To make an Adirondack chair, you will need:

• 1 5/8” Deck Screws
• 2” Deck Screws
• Jigsaw
• Sandpaper
• Level

Materials Made from Cedar Wood:

• 2 – 1” x 5 ¼” x 33 ¾” Side Rails
• 1 – 1” x 4 ¼” x 23 ¼” Bottom back rail
• 9 – ¾” x 2 ¼” x 23 ¼” Seat Slats
• 7 – ¾” x 3 ¼” x 35 ½” Back Slats
• 2 – 1” x 4 ¼” x 20 ½” Cedar Front legs
• 2 – 1” x 2 ½” x 29” Back Legs
• 2 – 1” x 2 ¾” x 6 ½” Arm Brackets
• 2 – 1” x 5 ¼” x 28” Arms
• 2 – 1” x 5 ¼” x 16” Feet
• 2 – 1” x 1 ½” x 19 ¼” Cleats
• 2 – 1” x 5” x 16 1/2 “Legs
• 2 – ¾” x 5” x 17 ½” Stretchers
• 5 – 1” x 3” ¾ x 24” Slats

To make the Adirondack Chair:

1. Begin by shaping the back, arms, and legs to your ideal design.  This is done by outlining a particular shape or design, and cutting it out with the jigsaw.  Finish the cut area with sandpaper, to create a nice smooth finish. 2. Begin assembling the lower back rail.  This is done by screwing one screw at each end of the rail.  Use a level to determine if the base is level before securing the rail into place with a second screw.
3. Begin to install the seat slats.  Use a 1" spacer to properly place the first slat, and then equally space the remaining slats.  Screw the assembled seat base to the side legs.
4. Attach the rear legs to the side rails by screwing them on.  Attach the seat back to the top of the back legs, and flip the seat over to install the back slats to the structure. 
5. Begin installing the back slats to the chair.  Begin by centering the first slat, and continue to install the remaining slats spaced equally apart from each other. 
6. Assemble the arms.  Screw the arms into the front legs first with the 2 inch deck screws then attach them to the rear legs. Flip the chair over, and it is ready for use.

Follow downloadable plans in order to determine the size and patterns. Stain or paint the chair for protection against the weather.
